經過一番掙扎思考以後，他決定不去偷別人的衣服，就以堅決的語氣回答他的上司：「我不去！」他的上司很驚訝他竟敢不服從命令，立刻問他說：「你為什麼不去？」可是這位新兵也沒有回答什麼，只是用很堅決的表情看著他的長官，顯示他不去偷別人東西的決心，這時候那位上尉知道新兵的意願已定，也就不再說什麼。
