1. 這是一則猶太人流傳下來的民間故事。有一個人非常有錢，有很多財產，有一天，他得了重病，沒辦法康復。因為他很有錢，所以他的家人從各地請了好多出名的醫生來幫他看病，但是都沒有人能夠把他的病醫好。
2. 他的病越來越嚴重，看起來好像沒有藥救了、沒有希望了。當他的家人已經絕望的時候，有一位從遠方來的修行人經過，就跟他們說：「如果你們能夠找到一個很快樂的人，把他身上的衣服拿下來，讓你們父親穿上，他的病就會好。」
3. 那個富翁的家人聽了，就到處去找快樂的人，但是他們找遍了各地，都找不到一個真正快樂的人。因為他們找到的那些人，他們的快樂都不是圓滿的，所以不能算是真正快樂的人。他們就這樣一直找，找到最後都放棄希望了。不過那個富翁有一個兒子非常孝順，他不想讓父親離開他們，決定要把父親的病醫好，就離開家鄉，去到很遠的地方，決心要找到一個真正快樂的人。
4. 有一天，他走得很累了，天又黑了，他就想找個地方休息一下。這時候他正巧看到一個山洞，於是就打算在那邊休息過夜。當他來到山洞外面時，聽到有聲音從裡面傳出來：「啊！我是這麼快樂的人！我今天過了這麼好的一天，我每天都非常快樂！我什麼都好，我什麼都很高興、很歡喜！我是最快樂的人！我是真正快樂的人！」那個聲音一直這樣念，還發出很歡喜的笑聲，然後又聽他說：「啊！我現在想睡覺了，我很快樂地去睡覺。即使我現在死了，也會很快樂！」
5. 富翁的兒子聽了當然非常高興，他心想：「父親的病終於有救了！」於是就趕快跑進山洞裡找那個講話的人，準備把他的衣服拿下來。結果跑進去卻看到那個人全身光溜溜的，什麼衣服都沒穿！他就站在那邊，不知道該如何是好？
6. 那個快樂的人看到他一副很失望、很受挫折的樣子，就問：「你怎麼啦？」富翁的兒子說：「我想找一些東西卻找不到。」那個快樂的人就問：「你想找什麼東西？」富翁的兒子說：「我父親病得很嚴重，有一位修行人說，如果我能夠找到一個真正快樂的人，把他的衣服拿下來，帶回去給我父親穿上，他的病就會好。所以我才會來這裡想拿你的衣服，沒想到你竟然沒有穿任何衣服！」那個快樂的人說：「哎呀！我如果有穿衣服的話，就不會這麼快樂了！」
7. 他的意思是說，如果他有任何財產的話，就會有負擔，不會那麼快樂。就因為他什麼都沒有，所以他沒有壓力，不會怕失去任何東西，不怕別人來偷，不怕自己的東西會毀壞掉，也不用擔心明天沒有該怎麼辦？因為他什麼都沒有，不能和別人比較，所以也不怕別人的東西比他好。因此，他沒有什麼憂慮，不需要擔心什麼，不怕別人來偷，不怕別人傷害他，所以他才會那麼快樂。
