Thisfigureofspeechisplainandpungent.Saltissavory,purifying,preservative.ItisoneofthosesuperfluitieswhichthegreatFrenchwitdefinedas「thingsthatareverynecessary」.Fromtheverybeginningofhumanhistorymenhavesetahighvalueuponsaltandsoughtforitincavesandbytheseashore.Thenationthathadagoodsupplywascountedrich.Abagofsalt,amongthebarbaroustribes,wasworthmorethanaman.TheJewsprizeditespecially,becausetheylivedinawarmclimatewherefoodwasdifficulttokeep,andbecausetheirreligionlaidparticularemphasisoncleanliness,andbecausesaltwaslargelyusedintheirsacrifices.
Christchoseanimagewhichwasfamiliar,whenHesaidtoHisdisciples,「Youarethesaltoftheearth.」Thiswashisconceptionoftheirmission,theirinfluence.Theyweretocleanseandsweetentheworldinwhichtheylived,tokeepitfromdecay,togiveanewandmorewholesomeflavortohumanexistence.Theirfunctionwasnottobepassive,butactive.Thesphereofitsactionwastobethispresentlife.Thereisnouseinsavingsaltforheaven.Itwillnotbeneededthere,itsmissionistopermeate,season,andpurifythingsonearth

基督耶穌選用了這個常見事物作比喻，對他的門徒說：「你們是人間的鹽。」他把他們的使命和影響歸結為這句話。他們要清除他們所在世界的墮落，為人類的生活增加一種清新而又健康的味道。他們將積極而非消極地作用於世間。他們的行為只在凡間，因為天堂無需淨化，不用儲藏鹽。滲透、調味、淨化世間的一切成了鹽的使命。
