Theauditoriumisfullofpeopleconversingintheaudience.Onthestagetheperformersareshufflingtheirmusicandtuningtheirinstrumentsastheypreparefortheperformance.Theconductorenters,takesabow,andallissilent.Heraiseshisbatonandthesymphonybeginstoplay.Alloftheinstrumentshavedifferentsounds,andthepartstheyplayblendandharmonizewithoneanother.Themusicwouldnotbeasexcitingifeverypartwerethesame.Thesymphonyisasymbolforlife,especiallyinacommunity.Diversityandthecomingtogetherofeachinstrumentiswhatgivesthesymphonyitsuniqueandspecialsound.Thisisalsotrueinlifeandtheworldwelivein.Individualsbringintheirowninputthatinfluencesothers.
Asymphonyorchestraiscomposedofavarietyofbrass,woodwind,percussionandstringedinstruments.Eachoftheseinstrumentshasitsownuniquesoundbutwhenplayedtogethertheycomplementeachother.Likeasymphonyanditsinstruments,theworldiscomposedofmanyracesandcultures.Theyareuniquelydifferentbutcanhaveaninfluenceoneachotherevenifitisnotintentional.Ifyouarewalkingdownthestreet,forexample,andmoveoutofthewaysoasnottobumpintosomeone,theyareinfluencingyouractionswhenyoumoveinside.
Individualityisanimportantpartofthesymphony.Eachplayerhashisorherownparttoperform.Thesepartscanbeplayedontheirownbutdonothavethesameeffectaswhentheyarecombinedwiththeotherpartsoftheorchestra.Theyblendintoaharmoniouspieceofmusic.Inotherwords,youcanhearwhateachpersonhastocontributeandhoweachperformerworkstogether.Inlife,eachpersonhasatalentthattheyareparticularlygoodat.Whentheyworktogether,itaccentuatestheirtalent.Asurgeoncanbeverygiftedbutismorecapableofsavingalifeifhehasateamofmedicalpersonnelassistinghim.
Inanessaycalled「TheGospelofWealth」,AndrewCarnegiediscussedhisviewsonwealth,thepublicgood,andindividualism.Hedescribedindividualismas「anobleridealisthatmanshouldlabor,notforhimselfalone,butinandforabrotherhoodofhisfellows,andsharewiththemallincommon.」Carnegiefeltthatindividualitywasimportant,butshouldnotbetakensofarthatitseparateseveryonefromeachother.Eachpersonshouldcontributetheirownideasthatbetterhelpthecommunityasawhole.
Anothersimilaritybetweenlifeandthesymphonyisthataperformermaynotalwayshavethemelodybutwillaccompanysomeonewhodoes.Orinanothercase,aperformerwillnotalwayshaveasoloandthechancetobeinthespotlight.Inlife,everybodyhastheirmomentsofgloryalthoughtheymaygounnoticedliketheaccompanist.Thisdoesnotmean,however,thattheyareanylessimportantthananyoneelse.Themelodydoesnotstaywithoneinstrumentforthewholesongbutmovesthroughouttheorchestra.Asinlife,everyoneeventuallyhastheirmomenttoshineandtheirchancetobeinthespotlight.
