Itisquitepossiblethattherelativestrengthofthesetwodrivesis,inthemain,fixedbyinheritance.Butthepersonalitythatfinallyemergesislargelyformedbytheenvironmentinwhichamanhappenstofindhimselfduringhisdevelopment,bythestructureofthesocietyinwhichhegrowsup,bythetraditionofthatsociety,andbyitsevaluationofparticulartypesofbehavior.Theabstractconcept「society」meanstotheindividualhumanbeingthesumtotalofhisdirectandindirectrelationstohiscontemporariesandtoallthepeopleofearliergenerations.Theindividualisabletothink,feel,strive,andworkbyhimself;buthedependssomuchuponsociety—inhisphysical,intellectual,andemotionalexistence—thatitisimpossibletothinkofhim,ortounderstandhim,outsidetheframeworkofsociety.Itis「society」whichprovidesmanwithfood,clothing,home,thetoolsofwork,language,theformsofthought,andmostofthecontentofthought;hislifeismadepossiblethroughthelaborandaccomplishmentsofthemanymillionspastandpresentwhoareallhiddenbehindthesmallword「society」.
