Butthebestdefinitionofexistenceeversawdidanotherphilosopherwhosaid,「Tobeistobeinrelations.」Ifthisistrue,thenthemorerelationsalivingthinghas,themoreitisalive.Toliveabundantlymeanssimplytoincreasetherangeandintensityofourrelations.Unfortunatelywearesoconstitutedthatwegettoloveourroutine.Butapartfromourregularoccupationhowmucharewealive?Ifyouareinterestedonlyinyourregularoccupation,youarealiveonlytothatextent.Sofarasotherthingsareconcerned—poetryandprose,music,pictures,sports,unselfishfriendships,politics,internationalaffairs—youaredead.

「生存還是毀滅。」出自《聖經》的這六個字在文學界可謂赫赫有名。哈姆雷特自言自語地說出了這六個字，從此它們成為莎士比亞作品中最著名的台詞，因為哈姆雷特不僅道出了自己的想法，也道出了世間千萬人的心聲。生存還是毀滅，生活還是放棄，是熱情充實地活著還是枯燥乏味地存在。一位哲學家曾問自己是否活著，我們每個人也應不時地這樣問問自己。這位哲學家用一句諺語作了回答：「我思，故我在。」
然而，對於生存，我所知道的最佳定義卻是出自另一位哲學家之口：「生存就是聯繫。」如果這是事實，那麼一個生命體擁有越多的聯繫，就越具生機。也就是說，只有擴大和加強我們的各種聯繫，我們才能生活得豐富充實。但陷入陳規舊套之中的我們，天資還不夠豐厚。除了正常的工作外，我們有多少生活的時間呢？如果你只對正常的工作感興趣，那你生活的範圍也就僅僅局限於此。因此，在其他相關方面——如詩歌、散文、音樂、美術、運動、無私的友誼、政治、國際事務等——你已經麻木了。
反之，每當你獲得一種興趣——甚至是一種新的技藝——你生活的能力也會有所提高，這是千真萬確的。一個對多種事物都深感興趣的人總會是快樂的，只有那些失去興趣的人才是真正的悲觀者。
培根說過，對人而言，失去朋友就意味著死亡。通過結交新的朋友，我們能獲得新生。這個道理對活著的人而言是千真萬確的，但卻不適用於活躍的思維。你的思維所在也就是你的生命所在。如果你的思維僅僅局限於事業範圍、物質利益或所在城鎮的狹隘生活圈，那你一生的生活都是狹隘局限的。如果你對中國當下發生的事感興趣，那你就活在中國；如果你對一本絕妙小說中的角色感興趣，那你就生活在這些非常有趣的人物中間；如果你集中精力聆聽優美的音樂，那你將會從周圍環境中超脫，活在一個充滿熱情和想像的世界中。
生存還是毀滅——熱情充實地生活，還是僅僅存在於世上，完全取決於我們自己。讓我們的各種聯繫更加寬廣穩固。只要我們活著，就要生活！
