Thebanker,laughingathissimplicity,said,「InthefutureIshallplaceyouabovewant.Takethishundredcrowns,preservethemcarefully,andmakeuseofthemintimeofneed.」
Thecobblerfanciedhebeheldallthewealthwhichtheearthhadproducedinthepastcenturyfortheuseofmankind.Returninghome,heburiedhismoneyandhishappinessatthesametime.Nomoresinging;helosthisvoice,themomentheacquiredthatwhichisthesourceofsomuchgrief.Sleepquittedhisdwelling;andcares,suspicions,andfalsealarmstookitsplace.Allday,hiseyewanderedinthedirectionofthetreasure;andatnight,ifsomestraycatmadeanoise,thecatwasrobbinghim.Atlengththepoormanrantothehouseofhisrichneighbor;「Givemeback,」saidhe,「sleepandmyvoice,andtakeyourhundredcrowns.」
