Andyoujudgeswhowouldbejust,whatjudgmentpronounceyouuponhimwhothoughhonestinthefleshyetisathiefinspirit?Whatpenaltylayyouuponhimwhoslaysinthefleshyetishimselfslaininthespirit?Andhowprosecuteyouhimwhoinactionisadeceiverandanoppressor,yetwhoalsoisaggrievedandoutraged?
Andhowshallyoupunishthosewhoseremorseisalreadygreaterthantheirmisdeeds?Isnotremorsethejusticewhichisadministeredbythatverylawwhichyouwouldfainserve?Yetyoucannotlayremorseupontheinnocentnorliftitfromtheheartoftheguilty.Unbiddenshallitcallinthenight,thatmenmaywakeandgazeuponthemselves.Andyouwhowouldunderstandjustice,howshallyouunlessyoulookuponalldeedsinthefullnessoflight?

我現在想說說你們身上的人性，因為熟識罪與罰的只有它，不是你們的神性，也不是迷霧中的侏儒。我常常聽你們談起犯了某個錯誤的人，好像他不是你們中的一員，而是一個闖入了你們世界的陌生人。然而我要說，即使是神聖正直之人，也不可能超越你們每個人心中的至善，同樣，即使是邪惡軟弱之人，也不可能低於你們心中的至惡。宛如一片孤葉，未經大樹的默許就不能枯黃，那犯罪之人，未經你們全體的暗許就不能為非作歹。你們就像一列向著人類「神性面」邁進的隊伍，是坦途，也是路人。若其中一人跌倒，他是為後面的人跌倒，讓他們小心避開絆腳的石頭。他也是為了前面的人跌倒，他們步伐雖然迅捷穩健，然而卻沒有移走絆腳石。
還有，這話或許讓你們聽上去心情沉重：被害者對其被害難逃其咎，被劫者對其被劫難逃其責；正直者對邪惡行徑也不是毫無干係的，無辜者對暴虐之徒的罪行也不是清清白白的。
是的，犯罪者通常是被害者的替罪羔羊，更為常見的是，負罪者擔負了無罪和免於譴責之人的重擔。你們不能區分正邪善惡，因為它們在陽光下共存，彷彿黑線與白線混織在一起。黑線一旦斷開，織工就應檢查整塊布，也應看看機杼。
倘若你們誰要把一位不忠的妻子送上法庭，請他也用天平測測她丈夫的心，用尺去量量他的靈魂。讓那欲鞭笞犯罪者的人深入那受害者的靈魂。
倘若你們誰要以正義之名，砍伐一株邪惡之樹，請他瞧瞧那樹的根基；他必將發現善根與惡根、產果的根與不孕的根全部糾結在大地靜謐的心中。
你們這些欲主持公道的法官，對於那表面老實而包藏禍心的人，將怎樣宣判呢？對於那傷人身體而精神受傷的人，將怎樣處罰呢？對於那欺詐壓迫他人而又受虐和受害的人，將怎樣起訴呢？對於那些懺悔多於過失的人，又怎樣懲罰？
難道你們信奉的法律所要伸張的正義不是使人懺悔嗎？但是，你們無法將懺悔加諸無辜者頭上，也無法將它從罪犯的心中取出。在午夜它不請自來，發出呼喚：人們會清醒，審視自身。而你們這些將瞭解公正的人，如果不在青天白日下明察秋毫，又怎會瞭解公正呢？
只有那時你們才會明白，那站立的與倒下的不過是同一個人，他身為侏儒的陰暗面與身為神性的陽光面融合於一身；你們會明白：廟宇的隅石並不比那地基中的石頭高貴。
